Urban Ministries of Durham was a great place to do community service. The employees were super welcoming to our group of teenagers and found plenty of ways for us to help, I was fully engaged the whole time. The clients of UMD were very kind and I enjoyed talking to them over breakfast and while I was in line. Chef Larry who runs the kitchen was very helpful and showed us exactly what to do, while having a good time. The clothing closet and food pantry felt like stores which seemed pleasant to the customers and made them good spaces to work in. Our group will definitely be working there again!

I have never stayed at Urban Ministries but am a frequent breakfast volunteer. The staff I have dealt with are extremely concerned about the clientele and I have seen nothing but friendliness and respect. They DO expect you to follow some rules regarding meals, e.g. not coming back for seconds, and do not put up with people who are unruly or out of line. I am a big fan of UMD. Kind hearted, concerned people.

Volunteering here was a really insightful experience. The staff was really nice and answered all my questions. They also helped me not panic about messing up a breakfast tray or in the clothes pantry. The clients were also very nice, talking to me about their experiences and giving me good life lessons. I would love to come back and volunteer again at UMD. It was just so much fun and informative.
