I will start out with saying that my family and I are absolutely in love with our sweet puppy. This was my first adoption experience and I can say after the fact that it was overall a positive experience. But I will admit that there were several times that I almost gave up because after seeing the initial posting regarding the puppies it took me over a week to actually talk to someone. After making numerous phone calls and leaving just as many messages I was finally able to talk to someone who turned me over to someone else who turned me over to someone else who told me that I may be able to adopt a dog the following day once I got out of surgery. Once this person turned me over to yet another person I was told that I would thankfully able to adopt to puppy the following day at Petco. All went well and I was able to bring our addition home. The other negative aspect of the process is that the adoption fee was $50 higher the day of the adoption then previously told and you basically have to go in a purchase a collar and leash from Petco to be able to leave with your dog even if it is only an 8 week old puppy that you are going to carry anyway.

They really need to find a way to give negative stars. I went to the shelter to adopt a Irma hurricane dog. When I asked to see a dog the shelter worker asked if I have ever had a dog, was I familiar with labs. I answered all her questions and was then told I could not see the dog. I went around the corner and went back around to hear her speaking to a woman who she evidently was holding the signature for. I was also told I would not be able to adopt any of the Irma rescues as they were no longer offering free adoptions. The next day Kay Hyman was on the news begging people to open their homes and get these Florida rescues out of the shelter. I was lied to and made to feel stupid while trying to save a life.

My daughter adopted a dog from this place 6 months ago. It states in her paper work from this facility that the dog was shaking and drooling the same day my daughter adopted her. When in all actuality the dog was having seizures. I just spent $200 at my vet to find out she has epilepsy. They knew something was wrong when they adopted her out. Shame on this facility for adopting a dog or any animal without throughly checking them out. All they want is that adoption fee. You should be violated and shut down. You have not heard the last of me Charleston Animal Society. Animal owners should be aware before adopting from this place.

idiotic and horrible, not to mention a very judge mental staff. since when does it cost money to drop off a dog. its free if you found it but 75$ if its yours. how does that make sense. key word animal "SHELTER". so if i found a dog a couple months ago and tried taking it in to be caring, but realize after that the situation wont work. it cost 75 cause its mine now they say. where is the sense in that? so they basically charge you for doing a good deed, sounds like a scam to get money for something that should be free considering their the only public resource for this kind of thing.

We adopted our kitten through CAS (and Petsmart) after Hurricane Matthew. Most of their kittens were sent to Petsmart and we fell in love with all of them. Feeling bad about "shopping, not adopting," we decided to go to CAS before picking up Petsmart kittens. When we got to CAS, they informed us those were their kittens AND it was free adoption weekend. Most of the pets were adopted that weekend and we were able to go back to Petsmart and get our fur-baby! She was a bit young, but our vet said she was in great shape!

My husband and I came here last year to adopt a kitten. We came away with two sisters, Helga and Heidi. The folks working with us, were very helpful and clearly cared a great deal about the animals in their charge. Helga and Heidi are much loved, and I believe are having a great life with our two miniature schnauzers. I appreciate the Charleston Animal Society for bringing them into our lives. They surely give as much as they take.

This is a very nice and clean animal shelter, however the phone is NEVER answered. I attempted to drop off two dogs who were lost and drove completely out of my way to the wrong s.p.c.a because i was unaware of where to take them. This is not the first time I have called and no one answered. Not only that but it was around 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon so it was not busy at all. PLEASE ANSWER YOUR PHONES.

The best animal shelter I have ever been to. The workers actually care about helping you find the right animal that is perfect for you and your family. They let you put an animal on hold for a couple hours for you to go back and get your other pet to see if they get along. They have behavior specialists that can analyze if your pet and potential pet will do good together. They are awesome!

My coworkers adopted a dog that turned out to be extremely vicious. Attacked and killed 1 dog, and severely maimed another of his other rescues. When finally it attacked his girlfriend, he had to take it back where they told him basically it was his problem. After much arguing they agreed to put the dog down, but they would only do it at my coworkers house. No kill? No way. 0 stars

Amazing what this place does for their passion for animals. Great place to volunteer, I always feel welcome and appreciated. After multiple surgeries including spade and removal of an abscess, months of care and a microchip placed, my kitten adoption was a mere $50 plus a complementary vet check-up. They also have lots of cute pet supplies. Highly recommended this place!

They take in animals and get them new homes. Its a no kill animal shelter. They are great at raising funds to run the place. They sell collars and leashes and picture frames too. When you adopt an animal here, a cat will be spayed or neutered and have its shots up to date, and would have been tested for FIV disease.

i adopted our dog august 2008, and have had the best experince. It was great that he came microchipped and all his vacanations and they even gave a 30 day health insurance. He has been so great and we would definitly adopt again. To anyone thinking of adoption go for it, you will never regret it.

Used to be a wonderful organization. Their current director is only worried about getting as much money for himself as he can. Your donations are paying for his 6 figure salary while they beg for dog and cat food donations. Give to an organization that actually cares about helping animals.

Got a great puppy from here. They are very nice people, but the paper work takes forever. They are always busy and seem to take good care of the animals. Ours did come home with hook worms and a cold that he spread to our other 2 but they are all happy and healthy now

Great shelter! All animals had plenty of beds, enrichment items, etc. Dogs were not barrier aggressive or loud, politely approached cage doors and some would even sit on command. The shelter staff was friendly.

Granted they brought my dog, Tye, and I together - but the fact that Tye was taken in for his treatment clean, and given back to us cover on feces and "crate cleaning" was their excuse is utterly ridiculous.

I took my 2 kittens to get spayed at here in 2009 and when I picked them up you would have never guessed they had any type of surgery. Not only was it fairly inexpensive they did a great job!

Excellent facility. Always clean, cages are generally personalized to help you get to know the animals at a glance, and the recently added walk-in free roam room for cats is just adorable.

Friendly staff. Animals well taken care of. Outstanding facility. Nice to be able to walk in and visit animals and not be hassled to adopt and just leave a donation when we leave.

Unbeatable NO KILL animal shelter. I volunteer here and without a doubt, this is the place to meet your next forever friend, volunteer to save a life or donate for a great cause.

Great facility and staff only bad note; almost impossible to communicate with if not in person so call backs as recommended are impossible and it is frustrating as a new owner.
